VMS Scholarship

At the time of his passing, Vuyi was training to be a chef at one of South Africa’s premier chef academies, the Prue Leith Chefs Academy. Vuyi loved cooking and wanted to be a chef, a dream we supported and now wish to see realized through providing scholarships to needy and promising young South Africans aspiring to become chefs. We believe Vuyi’s dream too good not to be lived through others with similar ambitions. As a result, we are launching a memorial scholarship in his honor.

All the proceeds from Immortal, together with other fundraising initiatives, will serve to support Vuyi’s memorial scholarship at the Prue Leith Chefs Academy. The scholarship will be housed and administered by the Nobantu Charity Trust, a non-profit, public benefit organization established to support such projects in South Africa.

Please support the scholarship by making donations through the Nobantu Charity Trust at http://www.nobantu.com/index.php/scholarships/vms-scholarship/ and spreading the invitation to your circle of friends on as many networks as you have access to.

In this instance, the more truly is the merrier.

We tragically lost our son, Vuyisile Miles Smith, on Thanksgiving Day, 26 November 2015. Vuyi, as we affectionately called him, was only 23 years old.

In attending to my loss and the resultant grief, I fell on the pen and wept on paper. I encouraged the rest of my family to do the same and the outcome was a collection of poetry and prose as a response to our loss and process of grieving and, hope fully, recovery.

The poetic memento birthed by this process is titled Immortal, after Vuyi’s poem in the collection, which also includes poems from Nomsa (Vuyi’s mother), Mbali (Vuyi’s sister), Helen (Vuyi’s stepmother), Kanyo (Vuyi’s uncle).

Preflight Books, Pretoria, a division of BK Publishing (Pty) Ltd, will publish Immortal in August 2016, Vuyi’s birth month. Immortal will be published in English and Afrikaans.

Desirée Homann translated the collection into Afrikaans.

All proceeds of the book will support the Vuyisile Miles Smith Memorial Scholarship. Read more.

"Immortal is much more than a family’s attempt to capture memory and meaning between the covers of a book. This collection will offer solace to so many families who have lost children, or any loved ones for that matter. It will put into words what grieving parents often find so difficult to express."
